LOMOcean Marine — naval architecture and yacht design
The studio

An office of nine, between the harbour and the biggest marina in the country.

LOMOcean Marine is based in ‘the city of sails’, Auckland, New Zealand. Our office is perched between the shore of the Waitemata harbour and the country’s largest marina.

Not only do we spend our day amongst an array of boats and ships as they ply their trade, race each other or simply head out to - and back from - adventures, but we are also privileged from time to time to see dolphins, whales and seals as well as plenty of birds and fish.

It is an inspiring environment for our team of nine to ten people – all with a passion for boats and an enjoyment of the many faceted, creative, innovative, technical and utterly absorbing process of helping new boats on their journey from spark of inspiration to a floating work of art, a workhorse or defender of freedom.

Company history

Craig Loomes Design Group, then LOMOcean.

01

When Craig Loomes first started drawing boats, the small design company founded and grown by Craig and Kirsty, was logically named after Craig. As his work became more sought after, the company was formally incorporated in the early nineteen nineties.

Just six years later, the company had delivered a significant statement to the international yachting world with the launch of the very innovative 27m Ultimate Lady- one of the first wavepiercer motor yachts ever, and recipient of an International Super Yacht award in 1998.

At that time, Andre Moltschaniwskyj (a composite materials structural engineer who had consulted to Loomes on a number of his designs over the preceding years), joined as a significant shareholder and director, with Kirsty Loomes also appointed as a director - prompting a minor name change to Craig Loomes Design Group Ltd.

04

The intervening years have seen the company growing in size, turnover and market presence, with entry into a wide variety of international markets that have included work-boats, high speed para-military interceptors, passenger ferries, fire-boats, pleasure boats, motor yachts, innovative sail boats and even more innovative record breakers, such as the 24m trimaran Earthrace and the 31m wavepiercer Planet Solar, currently under construction in Germany. This focus on proven innovation has recently attracted the attention of the military sector, opening up a whole new market for the company.

05

Although Loomes continues to play a major role, the company is now a very capable organization in it's own right, with a large library of tank tested and proven hull forms covering a huge range of vessel types and configurations.

06

The company continues to grow it's in-house structural engineering capability and can boast specialist skills not only across all sectors of marine composite design, but in wood, steel and aluminium that allows the delivery of highly detailed and integrated vessel design packages.

The growing maturity and capability of the organization has now prompted another name change to LOMOcean Marine Ltd, creating a new brand that demonstrates a commitment to longevity and continuity of the company and reflecting the synergy associated with a team effort from a hard working, skilled and loyal workforce. The name borrows a little from the surnames of each of the principals of the company and blends with the word ocean, a place that all the company's creations are designed for and belong to.

Accolades

World records, and the awards that came before them.

1998

International Super Yacht of the Year Award

Ultimate Lady

On Friday the 29th of October 1999, in conjunction with the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, LOMOcean Design was presented with the International Super Yacht Society Design Award in the 23 - 32m Power Category, for the design of the 26m wavepiercer, Ultimate Lady.

This is the first time that a New Zealand designer has ever won this most prestigious of awards and LOMOcean Design joined the ranks of the world's top super yacht designers.

The 26m Ultimate Lady was built in Auckland; launched in August of 1998 she is believed to be the first ever luxury wavepiercer catamaran. Prior to construction, the hull form was tank tested at the Australian Maritime College in Launceston and proved to be the most efficient catamaran ever tested at the facility.

2012

Photo Voltaic Solar Powered Vehicle World Circumnavigation Record

Turanor Planet Solar (later Race 4 Water and now Porrima)

In 2012, the 31m LOMOcean designed wavepiercer catamaran Turanor Planet Solar became the first ever photovoltaic solar powered electric vehicle - not just the first boat - to circle the globe. She also holds the record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by a PV Solar boat and now more than ten years later has many tens of thousands of ocean miles under her keels.

2020

World International Super Yacht Awards

The Beast

The LOMOcean designed 39m catamaran motor yacht, THE BEAST won best displacement motor yacht at the 2020 Boat International World Superyacht Awards in the below 499 GT category.

The BOAT International World Superyacht Awards is a globally acclaimed event, known for its credibility, prestige and glamour. It is distinguished from other yacht awards by a judging panel comprising current and former superyacht owners.

2008

The World Powerboat Circumnavigation Record

Earthrace

In June 2008, the LOMOcean designed Earthrace made history by smashing the previous World powerboat circumnavigation record by two full weeks - a record that has been un-beaten for a decade. Furthermore, Earthrace was able to achieve this running on 100% bio-fuel. LOMOcean wish to congratulate the Earthrace crew and supporters for this incredible achievement.

2002

Super Yacht Society International Design Award Finalist

Sampitres

Designed by LOMOcean and meticulously crafted by Vaudrey Miller boat-builders in Auckland, Sampitres was named a finalist of the 2002 Super Yacht Society International Design awards in the 23 - 32m category. With a beam of only 6.2 metres and overall length of 25.2 metres, Sampitres was designed to fit into tight harbours in the Mediterranean, where she spent a large amount of time. This part of the design brief required an extreme amount of research to gain high efficiency and transatlantic range with such a narrow beam multihull craft.

1998

Spruce Goose Design Competition Winner

Wavepiercer WP50

During the prestigious "Yacht Vision '98" design symposium, LOMOcean Design was awarded the Supreme Award at the inaugural "Spruce Goose Design Competition" for the conceptual design of the 50 metre luxury wavepiercer catamaran Wavepiercer WP50. The panel of judges, including design legends Glade Johnson and Bruce Farr, commented that the design had the all important "X" factor. Wavepiercer WP50 is the big sister to the award-winning Ultimate lady.

1994

Boating NZ Magazine Fishing boat of the year

Sportsfisher

Another break-through for the LOMOcean Design team was the Boating NZ Magazine award for its sportsfisher walk-around "Tournament" line of boats. Whilst Tournament 7 was named the Fishing Boat of the Year in 1994, the current and tastefully refined Tournament models are still being produced in New Zealand.

1993

Powerboat Race Organisation efficiency award

Tournament 8

As a testament to the ongoing research and development into hull efficiency, the LOMOcean designed Tournament 8 was awarded the Powerboat Race Organisation Efficiency award. This award is calculated based on the weight of the boat, the average speed maintained, the installed power and the overall fuel consumption, over the full distance of the race course. To this day, LOMOcean Design holds numerous efficiency records in the Tasmanian tank testing facility in Launceston, topping the list off with one of the most efficient catamarans ever tested at the facility.

1993

Volvo Penta Powerboat Rally multi-class winner

The categories were based on several performance-based stages and included prizes for efficiency, economy and nominated speed. Amongst the prizes won by Tournament 8 were the awards for best overall performance and Rex Henry trophy for best design.
